THE BIGGER PICTURE
Benfica’s Club World Cup journey ended when they suffered a 4-1 defeat to Premier League side Chelsea. However, the club will remain active in the transfer market before they commence their preparations for the upcoming season. Silva, who has been an influential figure at Benfica, had almost signed for Juventus earlier this year, only to see his parent club block the deal due to limitations inside the squad. However, with Benfica renewing Nicolas Otamendi’s contract, the Argentine will be expected to start alongside Tomas Araujo at the heart of defence next season, potentially forcing Silva out of the pecking order. Thus, now, with Silva garnering attention after his heroics in the Club World Cup, the Portuguese stalwarts are ready to offload the defender, who has two years left in his contract.
